On Saturday morning the magnificent seven students from the Federation headed to Gateshead Leisure Centre for the FA Cup Semi Finals of the Under 16 National Youth Futsal Festival. Having won the County Durham event last month, they were up against a team from Gateshead – Heworth Grange and two teams from Yorkshire – the Hessle Sporting Spitfires and York City Futsal Club.
The early start meant the first game against York City was at 9.45am and what a cracker to start with. The Fed lads took an early lead 1-0 after some fantastic one touch football. The games were of two ten minute halves and as the seconds ticked down victory was within their grasp. However, with the very last kick of the game York scrambled in an undeserved equaliser 1-1. Points shared.
Next up was Hessle Sporting Spitfires wearing black and white stripes. They were soon shot down to size as the Fed team found their wings and in a tough battle, came out victorious 4-2. The final match was against local rivals Heworth and again a victory was secured in a very tight end to end match 5-3.
Now as both York and the Fed teams had finished on the same points having drawn one and won two matches the final league standings were decided on the number of goals scored during the festival, Unfortunately York City managed to get a couple of extra goals in the last fixture and so qualified for the National Finals on goal difference. What a tough way to lose. The lads, however, showed great sporting attitude and congratulated the winning team as well as thanking all the officials and organisers. They are keeping their fingers crossed that the National Final in Birmingham in June require a wild card team to enter. All in all a fantastic season and throughout the whole of 2016-17 the Federation have played 12 matches and have not lost a single one. Congratulations to the whole squad.
